The stallions at The Spanish Riding School are all fed a mixture of good quality hay fed twice a day, once in the morning and again in the evening. They also have a hard feed three times a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Their feeds are normally made up from a mixed chaff that contains different chopped grasses herbs and seeds. They are either fed a competition mix or “muesli” made by Pegus, combined with whole oats, and/or simple fibre nuts. They normally have a combination of all three depending on their requirements plus carrots and apples!
The feedroom is located within the internal stables, and the stallions are fed using individual buckets that are mixed and then tipped into their mangers. The mangers in Vienna are made of marble! For the “Spanish Riding School Live Tour”, we have to pack all of the feed and hay for the horses whilst they are away from home. It is important that the horses’ diet doesn’t change when they are travelling, so for each of the stallions we pack the following quantities per horse per day:
